The Waqrapukara Tour with Palcoyo Tour will take us deep into the hidden wonders of the Andean world. Waqrapukara Peru, located at 4,300 meters above sea level, is a breathtaking archaeological site overlooking the Apurímac River. Its name means “horn fortress” in Quechua, inspired by its unique twin horn-shaped rock formations. This sacred site offers a powerful blend of mystery, history, and majestic natural beauty.
Unlike popular tourist trails, this day trip from Cusco will lead us off the beaten path. We will hike through remote mountain valleys, past grazing llamas, and along ancient trails once used by Andean civilizations. Along the way, we may admire ceremonial terraces, ritual platforms, and incredible views of the highlands. Every step will bring us closer to the legacy of pre-Inca and Inca cultures.
Visiting Waqrapukara Peru with Palcoyo Tour will not only challenge our legs—it will awaken our spirit. This experience may become a highlight of our journey, offering a quiet, mystical alternative to crowded tourist routes. The best time to visit Waqrapukara is between April and October, during the dry season.
During the hike, we will stay hydrated, protect ourselves from the sun, and embrace the silence of the Andes. The Waqrapukara Tour will allow us to discover a lesser-known side of Cusco, where nature, history, and tradition still live in harmony.
Cusco Hotel Transfer
4:00 AM
We will begin our journey early in the morning, between 4:00 and 4:45 A.M., with hotel pickup in Cusco. We will leave the city while it’s still dark and head south to start our Andean adventure. Around 6:30 a.m., we will stop in the town of Cusipata for a nutritious buffet breakfast. This hearty meal will fuel us for the hike ahead. Coca tea will help us adjust to the high altitude.
After breakfast, we will continue driving through Chuquicahuana and pass the beautiful Pomacanchi Lagoon. The landscapes along this route are peaceful and untouched—ideal for photography and quiet observation. Around 9:30 a.m., we will arrive at the trailhead near the Huayqui community, located at 3,600 meters above sea level. Here, we will prepare for the hike to Waqrapukara.
The hike will take about one hour and follow a moderate trail. We will walk through open highland fields, past grazing alpacas, native shrubs, and wide skies. The path will steadily climb, giving us more panoramic views as we ascend. As we approach the site, we will begin to see the towering rock formations that define Waqrapukara Peru, rising at 4,300 meters.
At the top, we will explore the ancient site with our guide, who will explain its sacred importance. The name “Waqrapukara” means “horn fortress”, referring to its two horn-shaped stone towers. The site features ceremonial platforms, terraces, and mysterious stonework built into steep cliffs above the Apurímac River. If we brought a box lunch, we will enjoy it here, surrounded by dramatic scenery and silence. We will also have time to rest, reflect, and take stunning photographs.
Around noon, we will begin the return hike back to the vehicle. The downhill trail will be easier and take about an hour. We will then drive for two hours back toward Cusipata. If we did not bring lunch, we will stop at a local restaurant to enjoy a buffet with traditional Andean dishes and drinks.
After lunch, we will begin the final leg of our journey back to Cusco. The drive offers a final chance to admire the rural highlands and quiet villages. We will arrive back in Cusco around 7:00 P.M., ending the tour near the Plaza de Armas or at your hotel.
